Dude Ranch Foundation and Durango® Boots Announce 2025 Cowgirl Scholarship Winner

In celebration of the enduring legacy of the American cowgirl, the Dude Ranch Foundation is proud to partner with Durango® Boots to present a $30,000 scholarship aimed at supporting young women pursuing degrees in the Western industry. This prestigious scholarship is announced annually on September 15th in honor of the National Day of the Cowgirl. Today, we are thrilled to announce Laurel Cox as the 2025 scholarship recipient.

Applications for the 2026 scholarship will open from September 15 through December 31, 2025. For more details or to apply, visit nationaldayofthecowgirl.com.

Laurel Cox accepts her $30,000 Scholarship check from Durango® Boots.

Laurel Cox: Sharing the Stories of the Western Industry

Hailing from Bell Buckle, Tennessee, Laurel Cox is an undergraduate student at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where she studies animal science and journalism. Through her focus on agricultural journalism and broadcasting, Laurel is passionate about sharing the stories of the Western industry with the world—advocating for its values and inspiring the next generation of cowgirls.

“There are so many passionate people with powerful stories that need to be shared,” said Cox. “I want to be the connection between people within the Western industry and the rest of the world. My goal is to tell the full stories of people’s lives and encourage cowgirls everywhere to chase their dreams.”

Empowering the Next Generation of Cowgirls

The National Day of the Cowgirl scholarship is awarded to one outstanding female student in her first year of college, committed to furthering the Western way of life. The $30,000 award is distributed over three years of continued education, supporting students in fields such as agriculture, equine science, ranching, or Western sports.

“It means so much to me as a cowgirl who is finding my place in this industry to know that others believe in me,” Cox shared. “I am so grateful to Durango for creating the National Day of the Cowgirl holiday and its scholarship to help me pursue my educational goals. I am honored to add my name to a hopefully long list of cowgirls who will continue to change the world.”

“Laurel embodies the strong values of faith, hard work, and community that are at the heart of the Western industry,” said Erin DeLong, marketing manager at Durango® Boots. “We are thrilled to be part of her journey and support her future as a cowgirl.”

Support for Military Families: Blue Star Museum Program at the Dude Ranch Foundation

As part of our continued efforts to share the legacy of the American West, the Dude Ranch Foundation is proud to participate in the Blue Star Museums program, a nationwide initiative that offers free museum admission to active-duty military personnel and their families throughout the summer months.

Although the Dude Ranch Heritage Museum is always free to all visitors, you may have guests or know military families who could benefit from the Blue Star Museums program during their summer travels. This nationwide initiative offers free admission to thousands of museums across the U.S., giving active-duty military personnel and their families access to a wide range of cultural experiences. It’s a meaningful way to say thank you to those currently serving, while encouraging exploration of our nation’s diverse heritage.

There’s still time to take part—the program runs through Labor Day, September 1, 2025. If you know a military family traveling in the region, we invite you to encourage them to visit and explore our museum’s exhibits celebrating the heritage, people, and landscapes of the dude ranch world.

Launched in 2009, the Blue Star Museums program is a collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the U.S. Department of Defense, and museums across the country. It includes not only the Foundation’s museum but thousands of other cultural institutions nationwide.

Horse Safety Tip

Rhythm Builds Trust

Horse Safety Tip

Tip for Helping a Horse Relax: Rhythm is reassurance.

Horses find comfort in consistency – especially in your seat, hands, and breath. A steady rhythm in your riding cues, like soft, even rein contact and a balanced seat, tells your horse all is well. Jerky movements, sudden pressure, or mixed signals create confusion and tension. Try This: On a nervous horse, hum a low, steady tune. That rhythmic sound encourages relaxation and signals that you’re calm, which helps your horse follow suit. It’s not magic; it’s feel, timing, and trust.

A Visit to Double Dee Ranch

Exploring dude ranching roots and Amelia Earhart’s Wyoming connection

Dude Ranch Foundation Executive Director Josie Hedderman at Double Dee Ranch Tour with Meeteetse Museums

Earlier this July, our Executive Director, Josie Hedderman, had the privilege of joining the Meeteetse Museum for a tour of the historic Double Dee Ranch near Kirwin, Wyoming. Tucked in the remote Absaroka Mountains and accessible only by four-wheel drive, the area, once known as Sunshine, Wyoming, offered a unique glimpse into the past.

Josie was invited to give a presentation on the enduring legacy of dude ranching, a fitting topic given the Double Dee’s history as a working dude ranch for many years. Built in the 1930s by Carl Dunrud, many of the ranch’s original structures remain standing today.

One of the most remarkable stories tied to the Double Dee Ranch is that of Amelia Earhart, who stayed there for three weeks in 1934. So taken by the landscape, she commissioned Dunrud to build her a cabin nearby—a project left unfinished after her tragic disappearance.

As a longtime admirer of Earhart, Josie found it especially meaningful to stand in front of the very cabin where the famed aviator once stayed. We’re grateful to the Meeteetse Museum for the opportunity to connect with this extraordinary place and share in its rich dude ranching history.

Ranching and Forestry

Partners in Stewardship of the Western Landscape

Foresters working in the field

From the shimmering stands of aspen in the Rockies to the ponderosa-covered plateaus of the Southwest, the Western landscape is both rugged and resilient – and so are the people who work on the land. Dude ranchers and consulting foresters share a deep commitment to stewarding the land not just for today, but for generations to come.

Consulting foresters are independent professionals who help landowners manage forests and woodlands for a range of goals including but not limited to habitat improvement, wildfire risk reduction, income from timber harvests, recreational access, and more. Moreover these professionals don’t just manage trees, they assist with comprehensive land management, from grazing plans and invasive species control to water resource protection and habitat enhancement. For dude ranchers, partnering with a consulting forester means unlocking new possibilities for your land, whatever your goals.

Forested landscapes are a treasured feature of many Western ranches. Iconic western trees support diverse wildlife and thrive when properly managed. Foresters can design and oversee treatments that stimulate regeneration and keep groves healthy, and have the expertise to find and utilize available cost-share programs that reduce out-of-pocket expenses for landowners.

Association of Consulting Foresters (ACF)

Consulting foresters also act as trusted liaisons with federal and state agencies. Whether it’s navigating funding through the Natural Resources Conservation Service, understanding stewardship contracts with the Forest Service, or participating in collaborative fire planning, foresters help ranchers cut through red tape and align with programs that benefit both the land and the bottom line.

They also play a critical role in wildfire mitigation, helping landowners reduce fuel loads and create defensible space. These are steps that can not only protect life, property, and livelihood but, in some cases, even lower insurance premiums.

At the Association of Consulting Foresters (ACF), we know that land stewardship isn’t one-size-fits-all. That’s why our members work closely with each landowner to understand their values, goals, and constraints, delivering science-based, customized solutions. So whether your forested acres are a small patch of shade near the barn or thousands of acres stretching into the mountains, a consulting forester can help you take a holistic approach to managing your land for the long term.

To learn more or find a consulting forester near you, visit www.acf-foresters.org.

Observe to Conserve Week

Wyoming Ranches Unite to Support Wildlife Conservation Efforts

Projects Driven, People Focused: Uniting people to advance Wyoming wildlife habitat, research, and education.

Dude ranches have long played a role in connecting people to the land, wildlife, and wide-open spaces that define the spirit of the West. This year, ranches across Wyoming are invited to join in the first annual Observe to Conserve Week, a new campaign aimed at raising awareness and support for wildlife and habitat conservation. Coinciding with National Wildlife Day on September 4, the initiative encourages tourism operators to pledge a small donation per guest during the week of August 31. Those who join in will be featured on a dedicated campaign page and recognized through promotional efforts aimed at increasing visibility and celebrating a shared commitment to conservation. Participating businesses will also receive swag-bag gifts for guests as a thank-you for supporting wildlife.

Trailblazing Women in the Saddle

A Look Inside Today’s Dude Ranches

From the article: Monica Ellis, head wrangler of Lone Mountain Ranch, on horseback in Big Sky, Montana. Kelsey Kradel/Courtesy Lone Mountain Ranch.

When you think of the American West, images of cowboys and open ranges often come to mind. But as Condé Nast Traveler recently spotlighted, the modern face of the dude ranch is increasingly female—and fiercely capable.

In a powerful feature titled “The Women Wranglers of Montana’s Dude Ranches,” writer Jessica Chapel profiles the women leading the way at three standout ranches: Monica Ellis at Lone Mountain Ranch, Siobhan Flynn at Hidden Hollow Hideaway, and Erin Dringman at Sweet Grass Ranch. From riding and roping to guest hospitality and land management, these women exemplify the spirit, stamina, and dedication that make dude ranching such a unique and enduring tradition.

All three featured ranches are proud members of the Dude Ranchers’ Association (DRA)—the governing body that sets the highest standards for ranches across the West. Membership isn’t automatic; only about 70% of ranches that apply are accepted. To join and remain part of the DRA, ranches must meet rigorous by-laws that ensure a quality guest experience rooted in genuine Western traditions.

As Chapel writes, being a wrangler today means far more than leading trail rides. It’s a career built on passion, resilience, and connection—to animals, land, and people. And the growing presence of women in these roles reflects a broader evolution in the industry—one that remains grounded in history while embracing new generations of leadership.

Prioritizing Safety on the Ranch

The Horse Safety Program

Horseback riding is at the heart of the dude ranch experience, offering guests an unforgettable way to explore the great outdoors. However, with the adventure comes inherent risks, especially in rugged wilderness and mountainous terrain. The Dude Ranch Foundation Horse Safety Program is dedicated to helping ranches manage these risks while fostering a safe and enjoyable environment for both guests and staff.

Through interactive Ranch Risk Management & First Aid for the Trail seminars, the program provides ranchers and wranglers with essential knowledge on accident prevention, site and equipment safety, and emergency response. By continuously refining best practices and safety protocols, this initiative not only enhances the guest experience but also reinforces a shared commitment to responsible horsemanship.

Introducing Garrett Olister – Wrangler Trainer

We’re excited to welcome Garrett Olister as our new Wrangler Trainer. Garrett’s lifelong connection with horses, combined with over a decade in the dude ranch industry, brings a wealth of experience to our team.

A skilled horseman and farrier, Garrett has worked at top dude ranches, gaining expertise in horsemanship, cattle work, and emergency response across diverse terrain. Currently, he leads the advanced riding program at Flathead Lake Lodge, training wranglers, starting colts, and managing guest experiences. Join us in welcoming Garrett—he’s eager to share his expertise and passion for horses with our wranglers and guests!

The centennial book project has been spearheaded by the Ranch Preservation Foundation, and the Dude Ranch Foundation has been named a beneficiary. We fully endorse this remarkable effort.

A listing of all current DRA member ranches will be included, while each centennial ranch will receive a dedicated feature with modern photography, historic images, and a written history. Additionally, the book will include a history of dude ranching written by historian and Foundation board member Lynn Downey.

Centennial Ranch Contributors Will Receive:

Use of photography for promotional purposes
Twenty complimentary copies & 50% off unlimited pre-orders
Personalized Centennial Ranch Plaque
A featured spot in the traveling Photo Exhibition scheduled for 2026

Participation is optional, but after covering expenses, every dollar raised goes directly to the Dude Ranch Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to preserving the Western way of life. Foundation Updates and 2025 DRA Convention Highlights

We gathered in Phoenix at the end of January for the 99th annual Dude Ranchers’ Association convention to celebrate the rich history of an incredible organization while keeping an eye toward the future.

It was inspiring to see such a diverse mix of attendees, from long-time ranchers to dedicated vendors and new industry faces—all coming together to share stories, ideas, and traditions that make this way of life unique. In the modern age of virtual meetings and electronic communication, I was reminded of the irreplaceable value of in-person connections.

Perhaps most exciting of all, we are on the cusp of a historic milestone—100 years of the DRA. This next year will be one of reflection, celebration, and innovation as we honor the legacy that brought us here. As we set our sights on the centennial milestone, I’m reminded of the timeless grit and pioneering spirit that define this industry and the individuals who make it thrive.

During the convention, I was elated to share some outstanding news: in 2024, we received a generous $50,000 gift from beloved, longtime ranchers. This donation has been a powerful reminder that our vision for maintaining and expanding our key initiatives is not just a dream—it’s within reach!  Generosity can have a powerful ripple effect, and in early 2025, we received an extraordinary commitment of $250,000 from a beautiful and historic member ranch! In both cases, our gracious donors prefer to keep the spotlight on the Foundation, and we’re honored to respect their wishes.

This is about much more than nostalgia—it’s about ensuring our heritage remains alive and relatable, building awareness of our programs, and creating opportunities for deeper engagement. We’re shaping what the next century of dude ranching will look like.

With a renewed sense of energy and dedication, we’re doubling down on our goal of growing our endowment to $3 million. Reaching this milestone will allow us to become self-sustaining, covering our annual budget and reducing the need for frequent fundraising appeals. Every single dollar makes a difference, and we are endlessly grateful for your continued support.

NOW is the time to build on this momentum – Ride with Us!

Remember, your financial contribution isn’t just a gift—it’s an investment in a way of life. Together, we can ensure these traditional Western values and experiences thrive for generations to come.

As we head out on the open trail of a brand-new year, I couldn’t be more excited for what’s ahead. We’re just getting started! Let’s join hands—I’d love to hear your ideas. Above all, thank you for being part of this journey.

Warm regards,
Josie Hedderman

This year, the Shoshone Lodge marks an incredible milestone—100 years of history, hospitality, and family legacy. As one of the original dude ranches in the West, it has welcomed guests from all over the world while remaining deeply rooted in the traditions and community of Park County. We at the Dude Ranch Foundation congratulate the Christiansen family on this remarkable achievement and applaud their dedication to preserving the rich heritage of Shoshone Lodge. Join us in celebrating this centennial story of resilience, family, and the enduring spirit of the American West!

The 100th Anniversary of the Shoshone Lodge

“We have been celebrating our 100-year anniversary with our guests all summer, and now that things have slowed down at the end of the season, we are excited to have been able to celebrate with our community, too. We hosted an open house on Saturday, October 19, and were thrilled by how many people turned up to celebrate with us,” said Mike Christiansen, 4th-generation owner of the Shoshone Lodge. “It was so fun to visit with many people who had great memories of the ranch. One woman came down from Montana for the open house and had worked here 40+ years ago. She said it was her first job, and she didn’t think she did great as my Grandma Betty kept moving her to a different position each week. Another gentleman came up for the celebration who is turning 90 this year. He was one of the few people I have met who remembered not only my Grandpa Harry but also my Great-Grandfather Henry. He remembers a hunting trip with Harry when he was a young boy and Henry showing him his sheriff’s pistol.”

The 100th anniversary of the Shoshone Lodge is being celebrated this year as the Park County Archives and Shoshone Forest records show that the first permit was issued to the Dahlem family to begin construction on the Shoshone Lodge in 1924, with several cabins and outbuildings being constructed in that year; however, the build-out of the entire complex was a process that took many years. They began construction on the lodge in phases, with the first section, which now houses the office and check-in area, completed in 1926. Additional sections of the lodge were added between 1927 and 1935, with the final addition not completed until 1944.

“We replaced the roof on the main portion of the lodge about 15 years ago,” recalls Mike. “When we tore off the old roofing materials, we found a board on the original decking signed by Harry Dahlem, which read: Red Star Camp December 1934. I’m sure they were hustling to get a roof on before winter set in and the snow got too deep.”

In the meantime, the guests stayed in small log cabins spread out around the Main Lodge and shared a central bathhouse. According to Mike, many of those original cabins are still on the property today and are utilized as tack sheds, tool sheds, and staff housing.

Because of Shoshone Lodge’s location, situated only 3.5 miles from the east entrance of Yellowstone National Park, it has always been a perfect location for travelers wishing to enjoy the park. It sits in the majestic Grinnell Creek drainage in the Shoshone National Forest, part of the Absaroka mountain range. Shoshone Lodge, its associated guest ranch, and hunting camps have been in the Dahlem family since its inception. The lodge itself was built from native timber wood, milled on-site at a sawmill the family had about 3/4 mile up Grinnell Creek from where the lodge was built. The lodge and original buildings were largely constructed by Henry Dahlem with the help of friends and hired men, as well as his wife, Bertha, a rock hound who collected many of the rocks inlaid in the fireplace in the expansive great room.

In addition to founding and building the Shoshone Lodge, Henry was Park County’s first sheriff. He arrived in Cody in 1903 and worked for the Holm Transportation Company, taking tourists through Yellowstone National Park. He was known as ‘Honest Henry Dahlem’ among the locals at that time. He and Bertha had three children: Mary Helen, Clarence, and Harry. They passed the ranch along to Harry in 1951.

Harry Dahlem died just a few short years later in 1954, leaving his wife Betty widowed with two young children, Keith, then 2 years old, and Debbie, a 9-month-old infant. Betty continued to run the Shoshone Lodge in her husband’s stead for more than 50 years, not officially retiring until she was in her 80s. She also owned and operated the Sleeping Giant Ski Area, which the Dahlem family founded with the Shoshone Alpine Club of Cody in the late 1930s. It originated on the slopes directly behind the lodge to the North but was eventually relocated across the river to the South when Harry and Betty obtained a new Forest Service permit and named it Sleeping Giant. It was Betty’s life’s work, as she ran both businesses full-time and raised the kids in the middle of it all. In 1959, Betty married Lee Woodruff and welcomed their daughter Diane a few years later. As the kids got older, they helped at the ranch, too. The girls married and moved off the ranch but Keith stayed and helped run the businesses into his adult life.

The lodge is now owned and operated by Henry Dahlem’s great-grandson, Debbie’s son, Mike Christiansen. He and his wife Betsy bought the lodge in 2006 while in their early 20s from Betty, Keith and Debbie. They grew up fast, learning the ropes of the family business and working to make improvements to the cabins and operations. They are now raising their two kids at the lodge as well. Mike and Betsy have now gone full circle back to the family legacy of milling their own wood on-site for cabin remodels by replacing the original wood paneling with log slabs milled from local timbers. They also are back to hosting weekly dude ranch vacations. “It is so amazing to get to share our family’s legacy, get out and ride with the guests, and show them the incredible nature in our beautiful area. It’s also fun to see how in awe folks become with the wonders of Yellowstone National Park as they tour, hike, fish, and enjoy God’s creation. There’s a little work in there somewhere, too,” Mike says with a chuckle, “but after 19 years, it’s still really enjoyable.”

“The lodge has been such a special place to so many people in this community, as well as guests from all over the country and our own family. We are so thankful that we are able to keep this family legacy alive and are excited to celebrate this amazing milestone anniversary. We hope to celebrate many more to come, and who knows… hopefully generations to come.”

Reflecting with Gratitude as 2024 Draws to a Close

Merry Christmas!

Friends of the Foundation,

As 2024 comes to a close, the spirit of the holiday season fills the air, bringing a sense of joy, reflection, and gratitude. This has been a truly remarkable year for the Dude Ranch Foundation—a year of growth, change, and incredible progress. I am honored to have the privilege of “taking the reins” of this remarkable organization. From the beginning, I knew I had big shoes to fill, or perhaps more accurately, serious cowgirl boots to fill.

This Christmas, as we gather to celebrate the warmth of the season, I want to take a moment to honor someone who has been at the heart of the Dude Ranch Foundation’s journey: Colleen Hodson. After nearly two decades of dedicated service as Executive Director of the Dude Ranchers’ Association, Colleen continued to nurture the Foundation as it transitioned from a DRA committee into an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit entity with its own board, budget, and bylaws. Her guidance, vision, and tireless commitment have been the driving force behind our success and growth. Colleen has paved the way for so much of what we’re celebrating this year, and I want to express my deepest gratitude for all she has accomplished.

Looking ahead to 2025, I am filled with hope and excitement for the trails yet to be blazed. The Foundation is poised to expand its reach and impact, continuing to support the dude ranch industry and championing education and preservation initiatives that ensure the Western way of life endures for generations to come. Your ideas, feedback, and support are the greatest gifts we could receive, and we look forward to working together to shape a bright future for the Dude Ranch Foundation.

During this season of giving, I invite you to consider a year-end donation to the Foundation. Thanks to a generous donor, every contribution will be matched up to $15,000, doubling the impact of your support. A charitable gift to our 501(c)(3) organization before year’s end not only helps preserve the history and traditions we hold dear but also offers valuable tax benefits as we enter the New Year. With your partnership, we can continue to safeguard and celebrate the Western legacy we all cherish.

From all of us at the Dude Ranch Foundation, we wish you and your loved ones a holiday season filled with warmth, peace, and happiness—and a New Year brimming with prosperity and promise. Thank you for being part of this incredible journey.

Warm regards,
Josie Hedderman
