ABOUT THE EXHIBIT

On many dude ranches in the small hours of the morning, horses are gathered from their pastures and driven to ranch headquarters during a daily ritual often called “The Wrangle.” Ranch guests gather to listen to pounding hooves as their vacation companions arrive for the day’s activities, repeating a tradition that has existed for decades.

“The Wrangle,” produced by Ranch Preservation Foundation, features a selection of images by Scott T. Baxter that capture the landscapes and people of historic dude ranches that have existed for a century or longer and continue to carry on these traditions today.

Created in celebration of 100 years of dude ranching alongside the Dude Ranchers’ Association, Baxter traveled more than 20,000 miles across the American West to photograph the ranches that have been part of the industry since its earliest days. The exhibit serves as a companion to his book, 100 Years of Dude Ranching, offering a visual journey through the history, heritage, and enduring spirit of the American dude ranch.

“The Wrangle” will be on display at the Dude Ranch Museum from June 4–September 27, 2026.
